Purification of Australian strains of Coxsackie virus.

چکیده

In the course of studying the properties of several viruses pathogenic for suckling mice (Stanley and Hayes, 1950; Stanley et al., 1951), it was found necessary to attempt to purify certain strains to determine if virus, free from large amounts of non-virus protein, could be used in haemagglutination or complement-fixation tests. This paper describes the purification procedures adopted with three strains. The use of these purified preparations in complement-fixation and haemagglutination tests will be the subject of a further communication.

Role of Coxsackie B viruses in myocardial infarction.

Serological evidence of Coxsackie B virus infection was found in 13.5 per cent of 52 patients with acute myocardial infarction and in 19 per cent of 52 controls with chest pain but normal electrocardiograms. In contrast to an Australian report, but in agreement with previous findings in Glasgow, it seems unlikely that Coxsackie B viruses contribute significantly to the causation of myocardial i...

Biochemical changes induced by Coxsackie B4 virus in short-term culture of mouse pancreatic islets.

Isolated mouse pancreatic islets were infected in vitro with two strains of Coxsackie B4 virus--a tissue culture-adapted strain and a mouse pancreas-adapted strain. Within 48 h of infection changes had occurred in the biochemical activities of islets infected with the mouse pancreas-adapted strain of virus. Basal insulin release was increased two-fold in these islets, while glucose-induced insu...

Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Activities of Turbinaria conoides (J.Agardh) Kuetz

Brown alga, Turbinaria conoides was successively extracted with n-hexane, cyclohexane, methanol and ethanol:water (1:1). The extracts were evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activities by disc diffusion method. Minimal inhibitory concentration was determined for active extracts by broth dilution method. The antiviral activity and cytotoxicity of the extracts were tested in human embryon...

Effects of Dextran Sulfate on Plaque Formation of Enteroviruses.

Takemoto and Kirschstein (1) found that the attenuated strain of type 1 poliovirus (sabin) contained three different plaque types when assayed with agar overlay medium containing dextran sulfate, and further investigated several biological characteristics of the virus strains with the largest and the smallest plaque types. In the present study, the observations of Takemoto and Kirschstein are r...
